Originally from Stockholm, Pontus Lidberg is an iconic figure on the international choreographic scene. Trained at the Royal Swedish Ballet School and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, he furthered his academic background at the University of Gothenburg. Throughout his prolific career, his immense creativity has led him to create over 40 works for prestigious institutions such as the New York City Ballet, the Paris Opéra Ballet, the Martha Graham Dance Company, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, the Semperoper Ballet Dresden, the Royal Swedish and Royal Danish Ballets, the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Beijing Dance Theatre, the National Ballet of Cuba, as well as for his own company in Stockholm and New York. He has also been commissioned to create original works for major venues and festivals, including the Venice Biennale and The Joyce Theater.
Also an accomplished filmmaker, Pontus Lidberg offers an innovative approach that seamlessly blends classical dance, contemporary dance, cinema, and the visual arts. His artistic vision fosters a harmonious dialogue between tradition and modernity, continually redefining the horizons of dance.
After directing the Danish Dance Theatre from 2018 to 2023, he was appointed Director of the Ballet de l’Opéra de Nice in December 2024. Driven by a desire to develop a bold yet accessible programming for everyone, he places artistic creation at the absolute core of his vision. True to his philosophy, he aims to promote cross-disciplinary dialogue and encourage collaborations with both emerging and established choreographers and artists.
