Quiproquos and British humour: Donizetti’s final comedy gets a fresh twist, reimagined in the style of a television series.

Presentation

Synopsis

An irritable old man, Don Pasquale, decides to punish his nephew Ernesto by disinheriting him. To do so, he plans to marry a young woman himself. But with the help of the lively Norina and Doctor Malatesta, the tables are soon turned and the deceiver becomes the deceived.

About the production

Quiproquos, disguises, fake marriages and clever deception: Gaetano Donizetti gives full rein to comic invention in his final opera buffa, delivering a score filled with energy and good humour.

Under the baton of Giuliano Carella, a specialist of this repertoire and regular guest of the house, director Tim Sheader offers a fresh reinterpretation of the work. Set in a world inspired by television series, Don Pasquale becomes a powerful business tycoon, trapped by his illusions of youth. With his characteristic British humour, Sheader embraces the opera’s comedic mechanics to deliver a playful and inventive staging.
