Opéra-Comique, National Opera of the Rhine and the Nice Côte d'Azur Opera co-production
Opera in three acts Libretto by Edmond Gondinet and Philippe Gille, after the novel by Pierre Loti Rarahu, idylle polynésienne Premièred on 14 April 1883 at the Paris Opéra-Comique
Gérald, a British army officer, happens upon a young Hindu, Lakmé, during his travels. Despite the prohibition, they fall in love – much to the chagrin of the girl's father, the stern Brahmin Nilakantha.
Based on this fanciful plot doused in exoticism, Léo Delibes composed one of the most enchanting French scores of the entire 19th century, and one of the most deservedly famous. In addition to the "Bell Song", Delibes employs the most bewitching melodies to paint this picture of a mythical India, where the dream of love collides with cultural and social prejudices, and the brutality of the Western world.
Here, we find the incredible Kathryn Lewek (our Lucia in the last season) and Thomas Bettinger, directed by Jacques Lacombe, one of the great specialists of French opera. A new staging by Laurent Pelly, in co-production with the Opéra-Comique and the National Opera of the Rhine.
