On the centenary of the composer's death (1858–1924) Nice Côte d'Azur Opera co-production
Opera in three acts. Libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. Premièred at the Milan Scala on 17 February 1904.
In honour of the centenary of his death, the Nice Opera celebrates Puccini in returning to one of his most essential masterpieces: Madama Butterfly.
In Madama Butterfly, the Italian composer retraces the terrible story of a young geisha, Cio-Cio-San, "married" to an American marine stationed in Japan. After his departure, "Butterfly", as he tenderly referred to her, spends her life awaiting his return, promising a happy future to their child when he comes back …
In this cruel drama, Puccini has created a score of a unique finesse: without ever falling into cheap pathos or scabrousness, he paints each of his characters with an understanding and tenderness which renders them more than simply alive – they are human.
Under the baton of our chief conductor, Daniele Callegari, Corinne Winters and Antonio Corianò will be the protagonists of this Nice Côte d'Azur Opera production, by Daniel Benoin.
Show in Italian with surtitles in French and English.
