Ballet in two acts, freely inspired by the novel Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino
In a hymn to humanism and the spirit of discovery that brings the entire world within our reach, Marco Polo by Luciano Cannito is a choreographic fresco that subtly combines the most dazzling shades. Here, a classical vocabulary rubs shoulders with dances infused with Oriental inspiration, propelling the viewer on a fabulous journey. Beyond this change of scenery, the ballet develops a veritable confrontation between emperor Kublai Khan, who hopes to enslave the world through his power, and the Venetian explorer who marvels at the diversity of his cities.
The success of this piece lies in the transcription of these two contrary visions through the dance and movements of each character. While the emperor remains frozen in his hieratic attitude and deaf to reality, Marco Polo is overcome with his enthusiastic perception of life. He leaps and turns to better celebrate the magic of the world – an ocean of possibilities that no one could ever hope to imprison.
