The story of Coppélia can be summed up in a few words : a village square caressed by the Galician sun, young people in the throes of amorous desire dancing in the most charming carefree mood, and Coppélia, a doll that an old scientist has made sufficiently realistic to provoke the jealousy of a young lady about to be married.
Little more needs to be said, as the story of this ballet is as exquisitely simple as it is disarming. But behind its apparent lightness, freshness and innocence, this work, which has been performed without interruption for over one hundred and forty years, is no less a masterpiece in the repertory of the greatest companies.
Coppélia is one of a small number of 19th-century creations that have survived without interruption or major alteration. Its vigor and longevity are almost miraculous. This skilfully balanced ballet has all the ingredients for success. First and foremost, the balance between pantomime, dance and Léo Delibes' music is noteworthy. The latter distills its accents so effectively that soli, pas de quatre and character dances are interwoven, while the corps de ballet cheerfully spreads out over two rows. It was not until Tchaikovsky that such cohesion was achieved. Next, Coppélia takes the opposite tack from the solitary technical demonstration.
The piece focuses not on a single character, but on a whole group of dancers who, on stage, demonstrate their complicity and infectious enthusiasm.
