Don José falls under Carmen's spell when he is supposed to take her to a cell after a violent argument with her fellow cigar workers. From then on, the brigadier can no longer live without his beautiful gypsy, who, for her part, abandons him for a dashing bullfighter...

Carmen's plot is effective, its situations and character psychology accurate, its music bewitching, poetic, fiery and exotic all at once. Rarely has an opera succeeded in giving such a feeling of obviousness and naturalness, in a discreet but very real modernity. And posterity has made no mistake: Bizet's last masterpiece is now one of the most frequently performed operas in the world.

Lionel Bringuier and Daniel Benoin take on this immense monument of the repertoire. With Ramona Zaharia, one of the greatest Carmens of her generation, and Jean-François Borras and Jean-Fernand Setti in the roles of the two rival lovers, the opera season at the Opéra de Nice closes with a veritable firework display.
