Nice, the promenade of great Wagnerian voices
Even if Nice was not the most Wagnerian city in France at the end of the 19th century, the operatic life of the Côte d'Azur capital was ahead of its neighbors in the 20th century, hosting the French premieres of Lohengrin in 1881 and L'Or du Rhin in 1902.
During this century, the "sacred monsters" of Italian opera were given pride of place, and their vocals could be heard. And yet, over the course of seasons, tours and opera directors, Wagnerian kings and queens came to sing in Nice, crowned with Bayreuthian success and triumphant in this Verdian land.
