Immediately after marrying Anna, the daughter of a wealthy landowner, Roberto abandons her for another woman. She dies. To avenge his daughter, old Guglielmo summons the Villis, supernatural creatures who come to punish unfaithful lovers by night.
Taking up the story of Giselle, a resoundingly successful ballet, the young Puccini tried his hand at lyric composition with this short work. His triumph sealed the beginning of one of the most phenomenal careers in the history of Italian opera. For this major co-production between institutions in the south-east of France, the staging was entrusted to Stefano Poda, a protean artist who has no equal when it comes to sublimating dreamlike and marvellous worlds. The baton is held by an exceptional Puccinian, Valerio Galli, who in 2013 was awarded the Puccini Prize for lifetime achievement.
Show in Italian, surtitled in French and English.
